Coniston is a storied town. Named Coningesbi in 1086, it is located on the base of Coniston's Old Man, which standing at 2635 feet is the seventh highest mountain in england. The town itself having being built around Coniston Hall was mined by the Romans, and today still boasts a four-hundred year old brewery, the Black Bull Inn. The Yew Tree Farm owned by Beatrix Potter is said to be the most photographed farm in England.
Coniston has its darker & Mysterious side, on 2-15-1954 Stephen Derbyshire photographed a U.F.O. On the slopes of the Old Man, which many discounted as a hoax.
Simon's Nick Rock Face, Simon a copper miner was shown a seam of copper by fairies but was blown up by one of his powder kegs, now his face still haunts the rock face that bears his name.
