Buttermere is a beautiful little hamlet in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria. It is in the center of the Lake District, just north of Grasmere. As the name of the park implies, Buttermere sits in a green meadow valley between two lakes, Buttermere Lake and Crummock Water.
The village of Buttermere is the epitome of the word “quaint”. The Bridge hotel is situated on a bridge that spans a pretty little creek. The church of St. James, built in 1841, stands on a hill that looks over Buttermere.
William Wordsworth, who lived and wrote in the Lake District said this of the church; “A man must be very insensible who would not be touched with pleasure at the sight of the chapel of Buttermere.”
Buttermere is a well-known spot for walks. It is possible to take a lovely walk all the way around Buttermere Lake with the help of tunnel carved out of a cliff.
