Some Interesting Facts about Bowness on Windermere

Bowness-on-Windermere is one of the beautiful, quaint towns of the Lake District in Cumbria in northwest England. As indicated by the name, it sprawls along the shore of Lake Windermere. Bowness and the neighboring town of Windermere have both developed so much over the years that they have virtually grown together, however Bowness has its own town centre. Bowness is Cumbria’s biggest tourist stop, largely because of the many water sports and the sailing enjoyed here, along with the Beatrix Potter House.

Bowness began to develop in the mid 1800s with the arrival of the railway into Windermere. Since it was the closest spot to Lake Windermere, the railway eventually expanded into Bowness. By the latter part of that century, Bowness began to take on a very Victorian atmosphere. Because of its beautiful location, many well-to-do businessmen began building large homes in the town and along the lake. Many of those have since been turned into hotels. One of these is the striking Belsfield Hotel that looks over Bowness Bay. The original owner of the home traveled each day to his work by steamboat. This steamboat can be seen at the Windermere Steamboat Museum, along with a number of other historic steamers and motorboats.

Bowness and the surrounding area offer many activities to visitors. Lake Windermere itself is about 10.5 miles long and is England’s largest natural lake. Windermere Lake Cruises that operates out of Bowness Bay provides a variety of steamer cruises across and around the lake. Some of these cruises take you to Lakeside Pier where you can visit the Aquarium of the Lakes. Bowness Bay and Lake Windermere are ideal locations for sailing and other boating pursuits.

If you are a Beatrix Potter fan, visit the World of Beatrix Potter while in Bowness. Many scenes from her books are recreated here. These include a three-dimensional display of the farm that inspired most of her illustrations.

Bowness’s oldest building is St. Martin’s church, which was originally built in 1483, although it was largely restored in 1870. Behind the church you will find the oldest part of Bowness that is still remarkably similar to the way it was before the railway arrived
. If you are visiting the Lake District, Bowness is definitely worth a visit.
